The Bay Area brings Silicon Valley innovation and San Francisco culture to the World Cup. Levi's Stadium is in Santa Clara, south of SF. The region's diverse tech-driven population means a truly international crowd for every match.
SFO and SJC (San Jose) airports both serve the area. Caltrain runs from SF to the stadium area. VTA light rail connects to Levi's Stadium. BART connects SF to the East Bay. Driving between SF and the stadium takes 45-75 minutes depending on traffic.
Stay in San Francisco for the city experience (but plan for travel to the stadium), or in Santa Clara/San Jose for stadium proximity. SF hotels are expensive. Consider Oakland or Berkeley via BART. Palo Alto offers a compromise between SF and the stadium.
SF has world-class dining. The Mission District has the best burritos in the country. Chinatown and Japantown are excellent. Ferry Building Marketplace is a foodie paradise. The Bay Area's Vietnamese, Indian, and Mexican food scenes are exceptional.
Fan zones likely at Civic Center or along the Embarcadero in SF. The Mission District bars will be lively for every match. San Jose's SoFA district near the stadium area has growing nightlife. Expect tech company watch parties across the region.
SF tourist areas are safe but be aware of car break-ins — never leave anything visible in a car. The Tenderloin neighborhood should be avoided at night. Summer in SF is cool and foggy — bring layers. South Bay (stadium area) is warmer.
San Francisco summer is famously cold — Mark Twain's quote about it is real. Bring a jacket. The Golden Gate Bridge is free to walk across. Cable cars are fun but ridiculously crowded — try the F-line streetcars instead. Alcatraz tours sell out months in advance.
