The birthplace of American democracy brings its legendary passion to the World Cup. Philly sports fans are famously intense and Lincoln Financial Field is known as one of the loudest venues in the country. Historic, walkable, and more affordable than NYC.
PHL airport is small and efficient. SEPTA's Broad Street Line subway goes from Center City to the stadium complex (NRG station). The city is very walkable — you can see most attractions on foot. Amtrak connects Philly to NYC (75 min) and DC (90 min).
Center City and Old City have the most hotel options. South Philly near the stadium complex is more affordable. University City (Penn/Drexel area) offers mid-range options. Philly is significantly cheaper than NYC for comparable hotels.
The cheesesteak debate is eternal (Pat's vs. Geno's is for tourists — locals love Jim's, John's Roast Pork, or Dalessandro's). Reading Terminal Market is a world-class food hall. Italian Market on 9th Street is the oldest outdoor market in America. Don't sleep on the city's Vietnamese food scene.
Fan zones expected on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway (the city's Champs-Élysées). The stadium complex in South Philly includes Citizens Bank Park and Wells Fargo Center — the whole area will be festival grounds. Fishtown and Northern Liberties have the best bar scenes.
Center City and tourist areas are safe. Be aware of your surroundings in less-traveled neighborhoods at night. Philly fans are passionate but welcoming to visitors. Summer weather is hot and humid.
The Philadelphia Museum of Art steps (the 'Rocky Steps') are free and have amazing city views. BYOB restaurants are a Philly institution — bring your own wine to great restaurants. The Italian Market is best on weekend mornings. Schuylkill River Trail is perfect for jogging.
