The legendary Estadio Azteca — the only stadium to host two World Cup finals (1970, 1986) — returns for a third tournament. Mexico City is one of the world's great capitals: vibrant, historic, and overflowing with culture. The atmosphere will be unlike anything else in this tournament.
AICM (MEX) airport is near the city center. The Metro is extensive, cheap (5 pesos), and efficient — Line 2 goes near the Azteca. Uber/DiDi work great. Azteca is in Coyoacán borough, south of centro. Metrobús is excellent. Traffic can be legendary — avoid driving during peak hours.
Roma and Condesa are the trendiest neighborhoods with boutique hotels. Centro Histórico is historic and affordable. Polanco is upscale. Coyoacán (near the stadium) is charming and bohemian. Mexico City is exceptionally affordable for international visitors.
World-class street food and fine dining side by side. Tacos al pastor, tlacoyos, tamales, and elotes from street vendors. Pujol and Quintonil are among the world's best restaurants. Mercado de San Juan for gourmet ingredients. Don't drink tap water — buy bottled.
The Zócalo (main square) will be the heart of celebrations. Angel of Independence on Reforma is where Mexico celebrates everything. Roma/Condesa bars will be packed. The atmosphere around the Azteca on match days is a pilgrimage experience. Lucha libre at Arena México is a must.
Stick to Roma, Condesa, Polanco, and Centro Histórico. Use registered taxis or ride apps — never hail random cabs. Altitude (2,240m) can cause headaches for the first day or two — take it easy, hydrate, and avoid heavy drinking initially. Petty theft exists in crowded areas — be aware.
The altitude is real — you'll feel it walking uphill and drinking. Take the first day easy. Frida Kahlo's Casa Azul in Coyoacán is extraordinary. The Anthropology Museum is one of the world's best. Sundays on Reforma are car-free for cycling. Mezcal is the sophisticated spirit of choice.
One of the world's best restaurants. Chef Enrique Olvera's modern Mexican tasting menu is a once-in-a-lifetime culinary experience.
